Nashville Indiana Offers Unique Shopping, Vacation Destination

The rugged beauty of Brown County Indiana provides inspiration for artists, an abundance of log cabin rentals for quiet getaways, and unique shopping destination.

Nashville, Indiana, about 60 miles south of Indianapolis, is the village most frequently associated with Brown County and where many of Brown County's 250 artists sell their work in a collection of colorful, lively shops that appeal to shoppers of all caliber.

It started in 1907 when a portraitist named T.C. Steele came to the area and found inspiration in the natural beauty of rugged rolling hills and expansive views. Plein aire artists soon followed, as well as creative individuals of all mediums.

Today, live theatres, music celebrations and restaurants featuring original cuisine complement the artists and artisans, resulting in a community of rich diversity and year-round activities.

Brown County Indiana Artists

Chris Gustin is one of those creative individuals in love with her natural surroundings and devoted to finding ways of incorporating nature in her work as a weaver. The Homestead Weaving Studio, located on Chris’ 20-acre property outside of Nashville, is made of native poplar trees.

It’s here on a screened in front porch that four of Chris’ 20 antique looms sit, and where she finds her greatest inspiration as wild deer, turkey, rabbits and raccoon wander through her front yard. Her creations and those of many of the artists in Brown County are ideally suited for furnishing the many log and rustic homes of the community. Before moving here in 1998, the aura of Brown County had already captured Chris’ creative spirit.

Chris' studio is open during both the Brown County spring and fall studio tours.

Log Cabin Rentals in Brown County

Log cabin rentals are the most popular lodging choice in Brown County. The tree covered hillside and winding roads that lead to quiet lanes, perfect for tucking away log cabins in Brown County. Some structures are as old as the county itself and quite primitive; others are luxurious beyond imagination, but all reflect the individuality and warmth of the people of the region.

With a record of about 1600 log structures in the county, some say there a more log per capita in Brown County than any other place in the United States. A good time to see these is the first week in June when several thousand people participate in the Log Cabin Tour of Brown County.

Indiana State Park Lodging

Nicknamed "the Little Smokies," Brown County's highest elevation is 1,058 feet, a far cry from the highest elevation of Smoky Mountain National Park's 6643 feet.

Encompassing more than 16,000 acres, Brown County State Park is I welcomes more than five million visitors a year making it Indiana's most popular state park. From the spring wildflower and mushroom festivals to autumn color tours and even ice fishing in the winter, this state park earns its tax payer dollars.

The Abe Martin Lodge, named for the 1930s era cartoon character of the came name, is the focal point of the of Brown County State Park. For those who do not require the amenities of a roof over their heads, the park also has five camp grounds and nearly 450 camping sites. With two man-made lakes, a swimming pool, tennis courts and horse stables, there's plenty to keep visitors entertained.
